WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU? is an artistic project that takes place in the\u00a0<\/i>public, private, intimate and daily space of citizens whose tax money\u00a0<\/i>contributes to financing artistic endeavors. The goal of this project is to ask\u00a0<\/i>citizens a performative question about the value of artistic acts, moments,\u00a0<\/i>and exchanges; a question about the effects that art produces and the means\u00a0<\/i>necessary to their production.\u00a0<\/i>Much of this encounter happens through the conception a work of art which\u00a0<\/i>citizens are given the opportunity to commission.<\/i><\/p>\n
This project is designed as a multistage course in which participants are\u00a0<\/i>encouraged to reflect on, think through, and test the mechanics of desire at\u00a0<\/i>work in every artistic act or negotiation.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n
By performing itself as a service that makes available a series of skills to\u00a0<\/i>patrons, the project creates the conditions for a deeper exchange on the\u00a0<\/i>question of art: who looks at art, and who does art look at?<\/i><\/p>\n
PRACTICAL MATTERS<\/p>\n
Future patrons will first call a special phone number to set up a meeting to\u00a0discuss their commission with the artist.<\/p>\n
The object of the commission should not necessarily be artistic in character,\u00a0but citizens will be expected to justify why they would see fit to ask an artist\u00a0to produce it.<\/p>\n
The artist and patrons will discuss the terms of the commission in a 30-minute,public negotiation.<\/p>\n
If the negotiation succeeds, the artist will produce a response to the\u00a0commission, no matter its content. Patrons will commit to receiving the\u00a0response\u2014no matter its form\u2014and to be present when it is produced.<\/p>\n
Production will occur on a date determined by the patrons and the artist\u00a0together and scheduled during the project\u2019s hosting period.<\/p>\n
